Foil Tape
This is self-adhesive electrically conductive tape made from lead or aluminum and is used to detect the breaking of glass. Below we see a diagram of a glass section fitted with foil tape. A make-off block is used to terminate the tape and connect to the alarm cable. When the glass is broken the tape will also break and thus activate the alarm system.
FITTING FOIL TAPE
- Make sure that the gloss section to be protected is clean and free from grease.
- Measure off the amount of tape needed to form a complete loop on the window and tear off from the roll. This makes it easier to put on without breaking. Note: it is important not to break the tape as it cannot be stuck together on the glass so it must be put on in one unbroken strip.
- Make sure that the tape is at least 75mm from the edge of the window.
- Remember it is preferable to have both a detection and a tamper loop.
- When the tape has been stuck to the glass the make-off block can then be fitted to the edge of the glass and the connection to the alarm cable made. (see previous page)
- As this tape is easily broken it can be damaged when cleaning the window therefore a coating of clear varnish should be put on over the tape. Any type of wood varnish can be used and is applied by a standard small faint brush. It is a good idea to use masking tape placed about 15mm either side of the foil tape before varnishing. When it is dry the masking tape can then be removed and this will give a good straight line.
Note:
Fitting foil tape is not an easy task especially when making corners as it must be put on without breaking the tape. So allow plenty of time for fitting.
